The Pepino Gold melon pear (Solanum muricatum) is an extraordinary, exotic fruit plant that should be in every garden. Due to its golden-yellow color, shape, and sweet, fruity flavor, it is also called apple melon or melon pear . The flesh is firm, juicy, and tastes like a mixture of melon, pear, and banana – a true taste sensation!
The pepino originally comes from the highlands of South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru), where it has been valued for centuries as a vitamin-rich crop. Today it is also very popular in Europe – both as an ornamental plant with exotic flair and as a vitamin-rich fruit plant .
🌿 Care & Location:
Solanum muricatum thrives in a sunny, warm location – ideally in a greenhouse, conservatory, or on a patio. It grows bushy and bears fruit quickly, often within four months of planting .
Consistent watering is important, but waterlogging should be avoided. As with tomatoes, carefully removing some leaves can help allow more sunlight to reach the fruit and thus accelerate the ripening process.
The first fruits can be harvested from August onwards. They can be eaten raw and taste excellent with cheese, ham, in fruit salads, or as a dessert fruit.
