The cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon 'Cranberry') is a small, evergreen shrub that, with its bright red berries , is not only beautiful but also extremely healthy and versatile . The plant originally comes from the moist bogs and dunes of North America , where it thrives in nutrient-poor, acidic soils.
In spring (May–June), the cranberry bush produces delicate, white blossoms , from which the familiar cranberries develop in summer. These can be harvested from August onwards. The berries are rather tart when eaten raw, but are excellent for making compotes, jams, juices, or as an accompaniment to meat dishes .
Vaccinium macrocarpon is easy to care for and winter-hardy . It thrives in moist, humus-rich, and slightly acidic soil (ideally peat or rhododendron soil). Dryness should be avoided, as it inhibits growth and reduces the harvest. The plant is particularly well-suited to moist locations or large containers on balconies or patios .
With a planting distance of approximately 10x10 cm , the cranberry is also perfect as a ground cover , suppressing weeds and impressing all year round with its evergreen leaves .
